Abstract
Basic sanitation is described as having access to facilities for the safe disposal of human faeces and urine, as well as having the ability to maintain hygienic conditions. It is estimated by World Health Organization (WHO) that 2 billion people lack basic sanitation (https://www.who.int). Methodology: This survey was done by the Department of Community Medicine, Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla along with department of environment, science & Technology, Himachal Pradesh from July to October 2020 to establish a baseline of the current knowledge, attitudes and practices of population in Shimla city in relation to sanitation. Results: A total of 640 households were selected for the survey.77.7% found toilet facility very important. 97.2 % of respondents had toilet facility, 2.5% use community toilets while 0.3% went for open defecation. 79.37% had toilet inside their home, 95.94% had all toilets functional, 4.7% had faced toilet related problems, 17.9% shared toilets with other household members, 98.59 % use water after toilet,89.1% had hand washing station at toilet,87.66% had soap at hand washing station, and 99.2% had never went for open defecation, 63% respondents had seen a sanitation message and 85.9% had never been to any community meeting on sanitation. Conclusion: 3/4th of respondents considered toilet facility as very important. Almost all of the respondents had toilet facility at home. Half of the respondents used sitting type of toilet, 3/4th have toilet inside their home, 1/4th share toilets with other households, almost all used water for cleaning after toilet, 3/4th of respondents had hand washing station with water basin at toilet, 3/4th had soap at hand washing station and almost no one had ever went for open defecation. More IEC activities should be planned on sanitation in the community and schools. Proper hand washing (with soap) after defecation to be encouraged.
