Economic Aspects of Forecasting the Coronavirus Pandemic
Sergey A. Surkov,
Ellen G. Trofimova
Based on the study of an array of data on forecasts of the development of the global economic situation, seven main components of the total damage to the economy from the coronavirus pandemic were identified. It is important to identify the possibility for humanity to predict the economy in accordance with the factor influencing it from a viral pandemic. For each of the components, the dependences of the forecast of the economic indicator on the time of the appearance of the forecast are built. Comparison of the sum of regression equations for these dependencies with the expression for total damage to the economy made it possible to construct an equation of total losses relative to the time of the pandemic. The first root of the equation -85.4 weeks is in good agreement with the known data on the beginning of the epidemic, the second root of 22 weeks can be correlated with the beginning of the next wave of the disease.

Birahim Fall
As any country affected by COVID19, Senegal has adoptedhealth measures restricting the travels and limiting the gatherings. In response to this new situation, many universities have deeply adapted their way of teaching. The agricultural college ISFAR of the Bambey University has implemented solutions well-suited to each of its departments namely the bachelor in agriculture, the bachelor in agricultural and rural advisory services, the master in rural and agricultural development, and the master in management of protected areas and wildlife. These solutions enable the continuity of the teachings through the uploading of the educational resources into a digital platform IFOAD and the assessment of the quality of the students’ research work by a validating scientific committee. This drastic shift in the teaching medium begs the questions of the respect of the health measures, the preservation of the quality of the educational system and the reliability of the students’ evaluation process.

Business as Unusual: Carving Out the South African Small, Medium and Micro-Sized Enterprises’ Path for Navigating Past COVID-19 Pandemic
Gift Donga,
Hlanganipai Ngirande,
Rachel Chinyakata
In order to exterminate the spread of COVID-19, the South African government implemented a national lockdown towards the end of March 2020 that prohibited the trading and rendering of non-essential goods and services respectively. Though laudable, the reality at play is that the national lockdown ignited a halt in national economic activities which, in turn, resulted in the unexpected temporary closure of many South African small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs). Of concern, is the fact that, the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has seen many South African SMMEs come under severe strain and financial distress, with their future survival uncertain. Nevertheless, these times as tough and lean as they are currently present opportunities for entrepreneurs to learn crucial business lessons from the experience, as well as to invest in ‘unusual’ business practices. Now, with the gradual re-opening of the South African economy, the critical question arises whether the majority of SMMEs will maintain sustainability even outside of the lockdown? To answer this question, non-empirical research was conducted taking into account a qualitative research methodology, namely a literature review. Accordingly, this paper provide insights on how South African SMMEs can navigate these unprecedented times of a global pandemic. Particularly, it unravels strategies for achieving the construction of a South African entrepreneurial environment that is robust, and sustainable with best chance of recovery post the COVID-19 pandemic.

Socioemotional Wealth, Organisational Justice and Innovativeness of Family-Owned Businesses
Kenneth Chukwujioke Agbim,
Margaret Oyekan
Owing to socioemotional wealth considerations, family-owned businesses were previously referred to as less innovative. Today, family-owned business owner-managers and researchers are beginning to agree that one of the bases of the superiority of family-owned businesses over non-family businesses is their level of innovativeness. The lets inhibiting this superiority include the altruistic and nepotistic practices inherent in family-owned businesses. This is evident in the injustices meted out to the employees, especially the non-family employees who most often are the key knowledge workers. Thus, the motivations for this are the variances in previous studies, the rarity of similar studies in Nigeria, and the economic contributions of family-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to the economic development of families and nations. The study investigates the mediating effect of organisational justice on the relationship between the dimensions of socioemotional wealth and innovativeness. Data were generated from family-owned SMEs. Based on Baron and Kenny’s (1986) four step approach, the data were analysed using linear and multiple regression. The results show that organisational justice indirectly and partially mediates the relationship between all the dimensions of socioemotional wealth and innovativeness. As such, socioemotional wealth needs to be combined with organisational justice to produce creative and innovative knowledge workers and by extension make the SMEs innovative. Organisational justice is presented as an indirect and partial mediator of the socioemotional wealth – innovativeness relationship. Thus, another way of improving the innovativeness of family-owned SMEs and preserving socioemotional wealth is to treat both family and non-family employees equally and fairly.

Business Start-Up Activities in South Eastern Nigeria: Does Family Network Matter?
Kenneth Chukwujioke Agbim,
Margaret Oyekan
Families, cities and nations are globally recognizing and harnessing the economic benefits of start-ups. Governments do this by supporting entrepreneurs to overcome the obstacles to new venture creation. Owing to the rarity of such government supports in South Eastern Nigeria, nascent entrepreneurs are resorting to their family networks to garner the necessary resources. However, with the commonplaceness of family networks in the region and the enterprising nature of the people, the rate at which individuals engage in start-up activities leaves much to be desired. Thus, in a bid to answer the question: does family network matter in start-up activities, this study investigates the direct and indirect effects of family network (financial, social, human and physical capital and family cohesiveness) on start-up activities in the region. The study adopts survey research design, proportionate stratified random sampling and simple random sampling techniques. Data were collected via questionnaire from trading start-up owners in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States. The study utilized the partial least square method to test the study hypotheses. The results show that the highest effects on start-up activities were made by financial capital and family cohesiveness. In addition, entrepreneurs accessed social, human and physical capital based on family cohesiveness, while financial capital was still accessed through family cohesiveness. The study concludes that family network matters in start-up activities. The employment of family network by nascent entrepreneurs as an alternative source of supports for start-up activities is recommended. Also, the use of triangulation method is suggested for further studies.

While self esteem and belongingness had a positive relationship with SDL, stress had a negative relationship. Of the 3 variables, self-esteem and stress reported a weak relationship, whereas belongingness resulted in moderate relationship with SDL. Further, analysis against demographic variables age and gender indicated no significant statistical relationship on SDL. The study concludes with these findings suggesting that SDL is impacted by the three mentioned variables, however as there is weak to moderate relationship among them, further analysis is needed to identify if there are any mediating factors that is directly influencing SDL in the work place.
