Abstract
This paper aims to reconnoiter how the use of Lubukusu linguistic jokes can be utilized as a stress reliever in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of people have lost their lives globally and if there ever was a time in our lives that we could use a smile or good laugh, it is probably during the period of the pandemic. Lubukusu humorous texts among others relieve tension and settle frayed nerves especially during difficult moments such as the COVID-19 period. Humorous texts have emerged in abundance in relation to COVID-19 since the advent of this global pandemic in Wuhan, China. Such worldwide disasters many at times elicit humorous responses which proliferate, irrespective of location, gender, age, ethnicity, social, political and economic affiliations. Humour in relation to lockdowns, quarantine, gross political ineptness, daily worldwide death toll, jokes, in reference to the pandemic continued to flourish. Lubukusu jokes on COVID-19 are expressed through oral or written texts, and songs. This study investigated the use of humour elicited from jokes by the Bukusu ‘Boda Boda’ riders from the Bukusu community in Kitale town, Trans Nzoia County, Kenya. Sixteen jokes were collected through face to face interviews from the ‘Boda Boda’ riders aged between 20-50 years from January 2021 – March 2021. The collected Lubukusu jokes were subjected to analysis under the conceptual framework drawn from Sultanoff Theory of Humour, through content research method to examine how Kenyans responded to the pandemic through trending jokes. It was discovered that when people are faced with disaster of any kind, they tend to turn to jokes for laughter, relieve of tension and positive feeling by sharing funny contents. Laughter strengthens the immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain and protects from damaging effects of calamities. Through laughter, hope is restored especially during this COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of this study provide a timely contribution to scholarly discourse in applied Linguistics, on the role played by humour during catastrophic times such as the COVID-19 one.
