Glaucoma, a leading cause of global vision impairment, often manifests asymptomatically in its early stages, emphasizing the critical need for heightened awareness and routine eye examinations. This study focuses on Himachal Pradesh, a region marked by unique cultural diversity, aiming to unravel the understanding of glaucoma among its residents. Material & Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was employed in Himachal Pradesh from August to November 2023. The study included 400 adults aged 18 and above, utilizing a Google Form questionnaire encompassing socio-demographic details and 20 structured knowledge-related questions on glaucoma and its risk factors. Data analysis involved Epi Info V7 Software, applying appropriate statistical tests. Results: Among the 400 participants, 25.75% demonstrated very good knowledge, 33.5% good knowledge, 24.5% fair knowledge, and 16.75% poor knowledge regarding glaucoma and its risk factors. Knowledge gaps were identified, notably in areas such as advanced diagnostic tests, treatment approaches, and the perception of glaucoma as a common eye condition in Himachal Pradesh. Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights into the current state of glaucoma awareness in Himachal Pradesh, revealing varying knowledge levels among its diverse population. Regional disparities, sociodemographic influences, and specific challenges were identified, emphasizing the need for targeted community interventions and awareness campaigns.
The human eye, a marvel of complexity, is susceptible to various ailments, with glaucoma emerging as a significant contributor to global vision impairment. Globally, studies such as those conducted by [1] emphasize the escalating prevalence of glaucoma and the associated burden on public health. The silent nature of glaucoma, coupled with its potential to lead to irreversible blindness, underscores the urgency of enhancing awareness and promoting routine eye examinations, as discussed by [2].
In the Indian context, where visual health is intricately linked with the socio-cultural fabric, studies like the Chennai Glaucoma Study [3] shed light on the prevalence of glaucoma in southern states. However, there is a dearth of comprehensive studies focusing on the awareness and knowledge levels specific to glaucoma in the northern region, particularly in Himachal Pradesh.
The impact of glaucoma extends beyond the individual, affecting families and communities. The study by [1] emphasizes the role of public awareness campaigns and routine eye check-ups in mitigating the burden of glaucoma globally. Tailoring these strategies to the unique socio-cultural landscape of Himachal Pradesh is essential, considering the diverse demographics and geographical variations.
Against this backdrop, this research aims not only to gauge the current levels of awareness about glaucoma but also to understand the factors influencing knowledge gaps. By unraveling the layers of perception, educational needs, and cultural nuances, the study aspires to lay the foundation for targeted awareness initiatives and community-based eye health programs.
As we embark on this journey to uncover the state of glaucoma awareness in Himachal Pradesh, the ultimate goal is to contribute not only to the academic understanding of eye health in the region but also to catalyze a positive change in the community's approach towards regular eye examinations. The Glimpsing Glaucoma initiative envisions a future where the prevention of vision loss becomes a shared priority, fostering a community that values the significance of routine eye care in preserving the gift of sight.
The objective of this study is to gauge the levels of awareness and knowledge about glaucoma, its risk factors, and the importance of regular eye exams for early detection among the general population of Himachal Pradesh
Research Approach -Descriptive
Research Design- Cross-sectional survey design
Study area: Himachal Pradesh
Study duration- between August 2023 to November 2023
Study population: The study's target population encompassed all adults aged 18 and above who had been residents of Himachal Pradesh for a minimum of 12 months
Sample size- A robust sample size of 400 adults was determined using a 95% confidence level, an estimated knowledge level of 50% regarding glaucoma and its risk factors , a precise 5% absolute error margin, and a conservative 5% non-response rate.
Study tool: A google form questionnaire consisting of questions regarding socio-demography and knowledge regarding glaucoma and its risk factors was created. The questionnaire was initially pre-tested on a small number of participants to identify any difficulty in understanding by the respondents.
Description of Tool-
Demographic data survey instrument: The demographic form elicited information on participants’ background: age, marital status, religion, employment, education and many more.
Questionnaire: The questionnaire contains 20 structured knowledge related questions regarding glaucoma and its risk factors. One mark was given for each correct answer and zero for incorrect answer. The maximum score was 20 and minimum score was zero. Scoring was done on the basis of marks as >80%(16-20)=very good,60-79%(12-15) =Good,41-59% ( 8-11)=Fair,<40% (< 8)=poor
Validity of tool - by the experts in this field
Data collection- Data was collected under the guidance of supervisors. The google form questionnaire was circulated among the residents of Himachal Pradesh for responses using online modes like e-mail and social media platforms like Whatsapp groups, Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin till the 400 responses were collected.
Data analysis- Data was collected and entered in Microsoft excel spread sheet, cleaned for errors and analyzed with Epi Info V7 Software with appropriate statistical test in terms of frequencies and percentage.
Ethical Considerations- Participants confidentiality and anonymity was maintained.

Table [2] In the present study 25.75% (101) participants had very good knowledge (16-20 marks) towards glaucoma and its risk factors, 33.5% (134) had good knowledge (12-15 marks), 24.5% (98) had fair knowledge (8-11 marks) and 16.75% (67) having poor knowledge (<8 marks).

The significance of such factors has been observed in studies such as the Andhra Pradesh Eye Disease Study [5] and could guide targeted interventions.
Aligning with the recommendations of [1], our study underscores the importance of tailoring public awareness campaigns to the unique sociocultural landscape of Himachal Pradesh. Drawing insights from regional studies, such as the Rajasthan Eye Disease Study [6], can enhance the effectiveness of these campaigns.
Insights from the study highlight the need for community-based eye health programs, a sentiment echoed in studies like the Andhra Pradesh Eye Disease Study [5]. These programs should be designed to address specific misconceptions identified in the study and enhance overall awareness.
The positive correlation between knowledge about glaucoma and the importance of regular eye examinations echoes findings from studies like the India Glaucoma Management Survey [7]. Emphasizing this link becomes pivotal in preventing late-stage diagnoses and aligns with the recommendations discussed by [2].
The study unveils specific challenges within Himachal Pradesh, where only 8.75% of participants consider glaucoma a common eye condition. This perception, unique to the region, necessitates targeted educational initiatives within the district, drawing inspiration from localized studies like the Gujarat Glaucoma Study [8].
The open-ended question in the questionnaire, garnering responses from 65.25% of participants, provides qualitative insights into community perspectives. Analyzing these responses, coupled with findings from the Karnataka Rural Eye Study [9], can guide the formulation of community-specific strategies to enhance glaucoma awareness.
In conclusion, this study not only contributes to the academic understanding of glaucoma awareness in Himachal Pradesh but also provides a foundation for targeted community interventions. Recognizing regional variations and addressing sociodemographic influencers on knowledge levels are crucial in developing effective strategies for promoting eye health in the diverse population of Himachal Pradesh.
