Background: Hearing impairment is a significant health concern that affects individuals of all ages and can have a profound impact on their quality of life. This research article aims to evaluate the knowledge about hearing impairment among patients attending the outpatient department of Civil Hospital Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh. Material and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted “between” January 2023- April 2023 among the patients attending civil hospital Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh and selected by convenience sampling technique. Data was collected through face-to-face interview using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed using epi info v7 software using appropriate statistical tests. Results: A total of 400 respondents including 250 (62.5%) male patients and 150 (37.5%) female patients were participated in the study. Among the total, 127 (31.75%) were from urban area and 273 (68.25%) were from rural area. In the present study 31.5% (126) participants had very good knowledge (16-20 marks) towards Hearing impairment, 34.75% (139) had good knowledge (12-15 marks), 25.5%(102) had fair knowledge (8-11 marks) and 8.25% (33) having poor knowledge (<8 marks). Conclusion: The findings suggest that while a considerable percentage of participants exhibited good and very good knowledge, there remains a portion with fair or poor knowledge about hearing impairment. These results highlight the need for continued and targeted patient education initiatives to enhance awareness, early detection, and appropriate management of hearing impairment in the region.
Hearing impairment is a significant health concern that affects individuals of all ages and can have a profound impact on their quality of life. Understanding the knowledge levels of patients regarding hearing impairment is crucial for effective management and the implementation of appropriate interventions [1-3].
Hearing impairment, also known as hearing loss, is a condition characterized by partial or complete inability to hear sounds. It can result from various factors, including genetic predisposition, aging, and exposure to loud noise, infections, and certain medical conditions. Hearing loss can have far-reaching consequences, affecting communication, social interaction, educational attainment, and overall well-being [4-6].
Despite the significant impact of hearing impairment, there is limited research on the knowledge levels of patients regarding this condition. Assessing patients' knowledge is essential to identify gaps, misconceptions, and areas for improvement in patient education and healthcare delivery. By understanding the knowledge and awareness levels of patients, healthcare providers can develop targeted educational initiatives and interventions to enhance patient understanding, promote early detection, and encourage appropriate management of hearing impairment [6-7].
This research article aims to evaluate the knowledge about hearing impairment among patients attending the outpatient department of Civil Hospital Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature by providing insights into the knowledge levels of patients regarding hearing impairment in the specific setting. It will help identify areas where patient education efforts can be strengthened, as well as inform the development of targeted interventions to enhance awareness, prevention, and management of hearing impairment in the region.

The present research aimed to evaluate the knowledge about hearing impairment among patients attending the outpatient department of Civil Hospital Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh. The study included 400 respondents, with 62.5% of participants being male and 37.5% being female. The distribution of participants revealed that a significant proportion (68.25%) hailed from rural areas, while 31.75% were from urban areas.
The study assessed the knowledge of participants regarding hearing impairment using a structured survey questionnaire. The results indicated that a considerable proportion (31.5%) of respondents exhibited very good knowledge, scoring between” 16 to 20 marks out of the total possible marks. Additionally, 34.75% of participants had good knowledge, scoring between” 12 to 15 marks, while 25.5% had fair knowledge, scoring between” 8 to 11 marks. A smaller percentage of participants (8.25%) demonstrated poor knowledge, scoring less than 8 marks.
The findings of this study reveal a relatively positive picture of patient knowledge regarding hearing impairment in the surveyed population. With a significant percentage of participants demonstrating good and very good knowledge, it indicates that efforts to educate patients about hearing impairment have made some positive impact. This level of knowledge can facilitate early detection, prompt intervention, and improved self-management of hearing impairment, leading to better overall outcomes for patients.
However, it is also noteworthy that a proportion of participants exhibited only fair or poor knowledge about hearing impairment. This suggests that there is room for improvement in patient education initiatives. Focused interventions and educational campaigns targeting specific knowledge gaps could be beneficial in enhancing overall awareness and understanding of hearing impairment among patients attending the Civil Hospital Jogindernagar.
To contextualize the findings of this study, a comparison with similar research conducted in other settings can provide valuable insights. Unfortunately, there is limited published research specifically focusing on patient knowledge about hearing impairment in the studied region. However, studies from other geographic locations and healthcare settings have reported varying levels of knowledge among patients regarding hearing loss.
A study by Ebrahim et al8 on patient awareness and knowledge of hearing impairment in a primary care setting found that a significant proportion of participants lacked awareness of hearing loss and its risk factors. The present study's results, demonstrating both positive and less satisfactory levels of knowledge, align with this prior research. This further emphasizes the importance of targeted patient education to address gaps in knowledge and awareness.
Limitations
Limitations of this study include its cross-sectional design, which offers a snapshot of patient knowledge at a specific time, and the limited generalizability due to the study's focus on a specific geographic location. Future research should consider longitudinal designs and broader sampling to provide more comprehensive insights into patient knowledge regarding hearing impairment and to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of educational interventions.
The survey-based evaluation of knowledge about hearing impairment among patients attending the outpatient department of Civil Hospital Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh, has provided valuable insights into patient awareness of this condition. The findings suggest that while a considerable percentage of participants exhibited good and very good knowledge, there remains a portion with fair or poor knowledge about hearing impairment. These results highlight the need for continued and targeted patient education initiatives to enhance awareness, early detection, promote appropriate management, and contribute to the overall well-being and quality of life of individuals affected by hearing impairment.
