Background: Surgery, a pivotal component of healthcare, holds the promise of recovery but is accompanied by the risk of postoperative complications. Understanding the level of public awareness regarding these complications is crucial for improving patient outcomes. This study explores the awareness and knowledge of early postoperative complications among the general public in District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, providing insights into the unique healthcare landscape of this region. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was employed to assess the awareness and knowledge of 400 adults in District Kinnaur. The study utilized a Google Form questionnaire, covering socio-demographic details and 20 knowledge-related questions on early postoperative complications. Data was collected between August 2023 and November 2023 through online platforms. The study population comprised residents aged 18 and above with a minimum 12-month residency in District Kinnaur. Data analysis was conducted using Epi Info V7 Software, and ethical considerations, including participant confidentiality, were maintained. Results: Of the 400 participants, 58.5% were male, and 41.5% were female. The majority exhibited good to very good knowledge (71.5%) of early postoperative complications. Concerns were identified, particularly in respiratory complications (53.25%) and dietary considerations (67.75%). Factors influencing knowledge included age, education, and socioeconomic status. The study recommends targeted educational programs focusing on identified gaps and leveraging community engagement for effective health promotion. Conclusion: This study unveils the awareness levels and knowledge gaps regarding early postoperative complications in District Kinnaur. The findings underscore the importance of tailored educational interventions to empower the community in navigating the postoperative phase effectively. Addressing specific concerns, such as respiratory care and dietary considerations, can contribute to improved healthcare literacy and patient outcomes.

In the picturesque district of Kinnaur, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh, the landscape's serenity belies the complexities of healthcare awareness and knowledge among the local populace. While medical advancements continue to progress, the success of surgical interventions is contingent upon the community's awareness and understanding of early post-operative complications. District Kinnaur, with its unique demographic and geographic characteristics, presents an intriguing case study to explore the existing awareness levels and knowledge gaps in this critical healthcare domain [3-6].
The significance of public awareness in the context of surgical complications is underscored by the fact that informed individuals are better equipped to recognize, communicate, and seek timely medical intervention when complications arise. Such proactive engagement not only contributes to individual well-being but also augments the overall effectiveness of the healthcare system.
This research endeavors to assess the baseline awareness and knowledge regarding early postoperative complications among the general public in District Kinnaur. By elucidating the existing understanding, the study aims to identify areas of improvement, inform targeted educational interventions, and ultimately enhance the community's ability to navigate the postoperative phase with greater resilience and knowledge.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the awareness and knowledge regarding early post-operative complications for among general public of District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh.
Research Methodology
Research Approach –Descriptive
Research Design- Cross-sectional survey design
Study area: District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh
Study duration- between August 2023 to November 2023
Study population: The study's target population encompassed all adults aged 18 and above who had been residents of District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh for a minimum of 12 months
Sample size- A robust sample size of 400 adults was determined using a 95% confidence level, an estimated knowledge level of 50% regarding early post-operative complications , a precise 5% absolute error margin, and a conservative 5% non-response rate
Study tool: A Google form questionnaire consisting of questions regarding socio-demography and knowledge regarding early post-operative complications was created. The questionnaire was initially pre-tested on a small number of participants to identify any difficulty in understanding by the respondents
Description of Tool
Demographic data survey instrument: The demographic form elicited information on participants’ background: age, marital status, religion, employment, education and many more
Questionnaire: The questionnaire contains 20 structured knowledge related questions regarding early post-operative complications. One mark was given for each correct answer and zero for incorrect answer. The maximum score was 20 and minimum score was zero. Scoring was done on the basis of marks as >80%(16-20)=very good,60-79%(12-15) =Good,41-59% ( 8-11)=Fair,<40% (< 8)=poor
Validity of tool - by the experts in this field
Data collection- Data was collected under the guidance of supervisors. The google form questionnaire was circulated among the residents of District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh for responses using online modes like e-mail and social media platforms like Whatsapp groups, Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin till the 400 responses were collected
Data analysis- Data was collected and entered in Microsoft excel spread sheet, cleaned for errors and analyzed with Epi Info V7 Software with appropriate statistical test in terms of frequencies and percentage
Ethical Considerations- Participants confidentiality and anonymity was maintained

Surgery, as a transformative facet of healthcare, necessitates not only skilled medical professionals but also an informed and proactive community. This discussion provides an analysis of the study results, incorporating comparisons with pertinent literature, especially within the Indian context.
The study discloses a diverse spectrum of knowledge among participants. A noteworthy majority exhibited good to very good knowledge (71.5%), showcasing a commendable baseline understanding of early postoperative complications. However, it is imperative to address the remaining percentage with fair or poor knowledge (28.5%), as they may be at an elevated risk of inadequate postoperative care.
Comparable Indian studies, such as those conducted by Sharma and Grover [5] and Kumar and Singh [3], resonate with our findings, emphasizing the persistent need for heightened awareness and educational initiatives, especially in geographically challenging areas like Himachal Pradesh.
The study reveals a relatively lower awareness (53.25%) regarding the risk of respiratory complications after specific surgeries. This aligns with studies such as Kumar and Singh [3], underscoring the importance of targeted awareness campaigns regarding respiratory care in the postoperative period.
While a substantial number (67.75%) acknowledged the relevance of dietary considerations in supporting recovery, the remaining percentage suggests an area for improvement. This concurs with findings in studies like Mowe et al. [7], emphasizing the pivotal role of nutrition in postoperative outcomes.
The study identifies several demographic factors that might influence knowledge levels, aligning with the research by Kumar and Singh [3]. Age, education, and socioeconomic status have consistently been linked to healthcare literacy, suggesting the need for tailored educational programs addressing specific demographic characteristics prevalent in the region.
Enhancing public awareness can significantly contribute to the overall effectiveness of the healthcare system. Participants demonstrated a strong recognition of the importance of communication with healthcare providers (67%) and adherence to postoperative care instructions (71.25%). These findings align with studies such as Rao [4], emphasizing the pivotal role of informed consent and patient engagement in healthcare processes.
Tailored interventions focusing on specific areas of concern, such as respiratory care and dietary considerations, can be designed to bridge knowledge gaps. Insights from Kumar and Singh [3] and Sharma and Grover [5] can further guide the development of culturally sensitive educational modules.
Involving local communities in the design and implementation of healthcare awareness programs can enhance their relevance and effectiveness [2]. Lessons from Mowe et al. [7] highlight the importance of community involvement in nutritional interventions.

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the awareness and knowledge of early postoperative complications among the general public in District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. The findings underscore the importance of targeted educational interventions to enhance community resilience and knowledge, taking cues from existing Indian studies on healthcare awareness.
